"First Mover" and Market Leader Strategy

Companies that gain a competitive advantage are the companies that are the first to move to sell products or services. They will become market leaders. This strategy is called first mover strategy

First, let's look at the definition of a first mover. According to the Strategic Management perspective (Luo and Peng, 1998), a first mover is a company or individual or organization that takes the initiative to do something that has never been done before.

Frynas et al. (2006) cited the example of oil companies Shell and BP as becoming dominant players in the global market due to their initiative in developing oil resources in Nigeria in 1950. However, Nigeria at that time was plagued with political violence.

From their challenging experience in Nigeria, the leaders of Shell and BP have developed valuable business and political competencies. Therefore, Shell and BP are able to easily establish oil resources in many countries.
